0.50 Pesetas Castanesa

One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes — known in Spain as "moneda de cartón" or guerra civil local issues — printed by municipal councils across the Republican zone when coin hoarding stripped everyday transactions of small change. Castanesa is a tiny village in the Ribagorça region of the Pyrenean highlands; the entire municipality would have issued these out of practical necessity, not monetary ambition. Imprenta Librería Güell in La Pobla de Segur served as the regional printer for several such councils in the area, which is why the typography and stock often look nearly identical across different issuing bodies from this pocket of Lleida province.
