Boltaña is a small municipality in the Aragonese Pyrenees, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when coin disappeared entirely from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply not reaching rural areas. These municipal emissions were authorized under Republican decree but executed with whatever printing resources existed locally, which in Boltaña meant extremely modest production runs.
The Gari Montaner reference confirms this as catalogued emergency scrip, but survival rates for Aragonese municipal issues from 1937 are low. The Aragon front was active that year, and many town archives — along with their remaining currency stocks — did not survive the campaign.
