Casa Segala was a Barcelona retail business collectivized under anarcho-syndicalist control during the Civil War, when the CNT-FAI seized large portions of the Catalan economy in the revolutionary weeks following July 1936. With the peseta hoarded and small change nearly impossible to find, hundreds of collectivized enterprises printed their own fractional notes — technically illegal under Republican monetary law but tolerated out of necessity.

The dry seal was the collectivity's only practical authentication method, applied by hand. No two impressions are identical in pressure or registration.
