Arbúcies is a small town in the Selva comarca of Girona, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities, it began issuing its own fractional paper money in 1937 after the Republican government authorized local authorities to produce small-denomination currency to address a chronic shortage of coin. The central supply of metallic fractional coinage had effectively collapsed in the first year of the Civil War, hoarded or melted, and the gap had to be filled somehow.
Turró catalogs over a thousand such Catalan municipal emissions. Most were printed locally, often by modest regional shops with limited typographic resources, which is reflected in the uneven quality common across the series. The alcalde's signature here belongs to Josep Pol.
