Torroja del Priorat is a village in Tarragona province with a population that barely reached a few hundred during the 1930s — yet like hundreds of Catalan municipalities, it issued its own fractional paper currency during the Civil War after Republican decree forced local councils to fill the void left by hoarded coinage. These hyper-local emissions, catalogued collectively under the *bitllets locals* of 1936–37, were produced with whatever printing resources existed nearby, which for a village this small often meant a local press or even a hand-stamped card.

The official stamp is the primary authentication — without it, the note was invalid for local exchange and worthless outside the municipality's boundaries anyway.
