Wetzlar's Chamber of Commerce issued this fractional Goldmark note during the stabilization period of late 1923, when municipal and commercial bodies across Germany were scrambling to provide emergency currency denominated in stable units rather than the worthless Papiermark. The 0.42 Goldmark face value is peculiar — most Goldmark Notgeld was issued in round denominations, and fractional values like this one typically corresponded to specific wage or pricing calculations relevant to the issuing body's trade.
Printed locally by K. Waldschmidt, whose small Wetzlar operation produced several issues for regional authorities that year. The Handelskammer für den Kreis Wetzlar had jurisdiction over a district better known for optics manufacturing than for monetary experimentation.
