Villarreal's municipal council issued this quarter-peseta note during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republic's central government could not supply sufficient small change to keep local commerce functioning. The parenthetical "La Caja Rural U.H.P." is the giveaway — Unión de Hermanos Proletarios, the anarcho-syndicalist militia slogan, stamped its presence directly onto the issuing institution's name. Rural savings cooperatives across Republican Castellón were absorbed or renamed under UHP pressure in 1936–37.
These emergency municipal fractionals were printed in enormous variety across the Valencian region, and most had very short useful lives before being superseded or simply abandoned. The Gari Montaner catalog remains the primary reference for Spanish Civil War local issues.
