During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination coinage led hundreds of municipalities across Republican Spain to issue their own emergency fractional currency — papel moneda local. Priego, a small town in Cuenca province, was among them. These ayuntamiento-issued notes were purely local instruments, accepted only within the issuing municipality and often printed on whatever card stock was available at the time.
The Gari Montaner catalog remains the primary reference for this material, and the 1180-A designation places this squarely within the documented Cuenca municipal series. Survival rates for these local emissions are highly uneven — some towns produced runs of a few hundred, and hoarding was common once residents realized the notes might become worthless overnight.
