Jijona — now better known internationally for its turrón production than its wartime monetary history — issued these fractional notes during the Spanish Civil War as the Republican zone fragmented into hundreds of local emergency currencies. The near-square format of this piece is not accidental; small-denomination local issues from this period were frequently cut from larger sheets with minimal planning, and the almost identical width and height suggest exactly that.
The issuing authority, the Conserjería de El Trabajo, was a local labor body rather than a municipal treasury — an unusual arrangement even by the improvised standards of 1937 Republican Spain.
