During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of municipalities and local organizations across the Republican zone issued their own emergency scrip when coinage disappeared almost entirely from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost to the chaos of war. Cúllar-Baza, a small town in Granada province, was no exception. The Casa del Pueblo — essentially the local workers' social center affiliated with the socialist UGT — stepped into the void that the banking system could not fill.
The validation stamp was the only real guarantee of authenticity these notes carried. Without a functioning central authority to enforce acceptance, local trust was everything.
