Boltaña is a small municipality in the Aragonese Pyrenees, and this quarter-peseta note is one of hundreds of emergency issues produced by Spanish town councils during the Civil War after the Republic's small-denomination coinage disappeared almost entirely from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent in rural areas cut off from normal supply. The Consejo Municipal issues from this region are among the more obscure entries in the Garrido Mas / Gari Mon catalogues, and the Boltaña pieces in particular survive in very small numbers.

The 351-E reference indicates a specific variant within the Boltaña emission sequence.
