Industrial Montalfita was one of hundreds of Spanish industrial firms that issued their own fractional emergency notes during the Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain a functioning coin supply left workers without any practical means of making small purchases. These vales — typically printed by the issuing company itself or a local print shop — functioned as wage tokens and canteen currency, valid only within the firm's own economic sphere.
The AL reference places this within Aurea Leiceaga's catalogue of Catalan Civil War issues. Barcelona issuances from this period are heavily documented but individual firm pieces remain difficult to trace in quantity.
