Comments

Juneda is a small agricultural town in the Garrigues comarca of Lleida, and this quarter-peseta emergency note is a product of the chaotic municipal money (moneda local) phenomenon that swept Republican-held Catalonia in 1936–37. With the banking system disrupted and small coinage hoarded or melted, hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own fractional notes — many, like Juneda's, in tiny runs that were redeemed and destroyed within months.

Turró catalogues over 1,400 such issues. The survival rate for low-denomination village pieces is poor precisely because nobody thought to preserve what felt like temporary pocket change.
