Noalejo is a small municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia. During the Spanish Civil War, dozens of tiny towns across Republican-held Spain issued their own emergency fractional currency — cédulas locales — when coin hoarding and metal requisitioning stripped local commerce of anything useful for small transactions.
