0.10 Pesetas Barcelona; Preventori Judicial - Economat

Issued in 1938 during the final stretch of the Spanish Civil War, this tiny card-stock voucher was produced by the Preventori Judicial de Barcelona — a remand facility holding individuals awaiting trial under the Republican administration of Catalonia. The Economat was an internal canteen or commissary system, and these fractional notes functioned as scrip redeemable only within that closed economy. They had no validity outside the institution's walls.

Dozens of Catalan prisons, hospitals, and municipal bodies printed their own emergency fractional currency during 1936–1938, filling the void left by hoarded coins. The Aledón catalog documents this one, but surviving examples are scarce — institutional scrip of this type was discarded rather than saved when the war ended.
