Lloà is a hamlet in the Priorat comarca of southern Catalonia, a settlement of perhaps a few dozen residents in the 1930s. That a place this small issued its own fractional currency in 1937 speaks directly to the collapse of small-denomination coinage during the Civil War — Republican Spain was functionally stripped of its copper and silver small change, and the vacuum was filled by hundreds of local committees, councils, and cooperatives printing their own emergency paper.
The printer, J. Llop of Falset, handled emergency issues for several Priorat municipalities during this period. Survival rates for these hyperlocal issues are unpredictable — low original print runs, wartime destruction, and post-Franco suppression of Republican material all took their toll.
