Additional information

Tauromenion — modern Taormina, on Sicily's northeastern coast — occupied an uneasy position during the Second Punic War, as Roman and Carthaginian interests collided across the island. This issue dates to the period immediately following the Roman reduction of Syracuse in 212 BC, when Rome was consolidating control over eastern Sicily and local mints were navigating the transition from quasi-independence to client status. The city had long maintained its own bronze coinage, and continued to do so under Roman hegemony, though output became increasingly constrained.
