Reverse description Facing scalp of a lion rendered en face, filling the field with bold relief. The creature's mane radiates dramatically in long, incised strokes around the broad, flat skull, framing deeply set eyes and a wide, flattened muzzle. The treatment of the face is highly stylised in the manner typical of Samian bronze coinage, with pronounced cheekbones and a squared jaw. Below the lion's head, the city abbreviation ΣΑ appears in the lower field, identifying the issuing authority of Samos.
