正面描述 Youthful head of Dionysos facing right, adorned with an ivy wreath composed of leaves and berries, with long curling hair falling behind the neck. A crescent symbol appears in the upper field above the head. The portrait is rendered in the Hellenistic style with fine facial detail, displaying a softly modeled visage characteristic of late Classical and early Hellenistic civic bronze coinage.

附加信息

Dionysopolis, on the western Black Sea coast in what is now Bulgaria, was a Milesian colony whose civic identity leaned heavily on its patron deity — the city was literally named for Dionysus, an unusual dedication that distinguished it from the more commercially oriented Greek foundations nearby. Bronze civic issues of this type circulated as small-denomination currency during a period when the region was absorbing the political shockwaves of Alexander's campaigns and the subsequent Diadochi wars, which repeatedly disrupted trade networks along the Pontic littoral. The HGC 3.2 listing places this among a thinly documented series.
