Tauromenion — modern Taormina on Sicily's eastern coast — occupied an unusual position in the late fourth century BC, caught between the expansionist ambitions of Agathokles of Syracuse and the residual Carthaginian presence in the west of the island. This bronze was struck during a period when the city was effectively subordinate to Agathokles after his forces took control around 304 BC, making civic bronze issues of this period politically freighted documents of a constrained autonomy rather than expressions of genuine independence.

HGC 2, 1588 places this type among the scarcer civic bronzes of the Syracusan sphere.
