Tauromenion — modern Taormina — occupied a strategically awkward position in the Roman reorganization of Sicily following the Second Punic War. The city had backed Rome early and was rewarded with a degree of autonomy unusual for Sicilian communities of the period, including the continued right to issue bronze coinage when many neighboring mints had gone dark. This issue belongs to that window of permitted local production, struck somewhere in the second century under conditions that remain poorly documented in the literary sources.
The CNS and Campana attributions align but the precise chronology within the century is still debated among specialists in Sicilian numismatics.
