Lysimacheia was founded by Lysimachus around 309 BC as the administrative capital of his Thracian territories, situated on the narrow neck of the Thracian Chersonese. The city's independent bronze coinage dates to the decades following his death at Corupedium in 281 BC, when the city briefly maintained autonomy before its destruction by invading Gauls in 279 BC and subsequent refoundation. This piece falls within the post-refoundation civic issues, struck before Antiochus I absorbed the region into Seleucid influence around 265 BC.
