Neapolis had been striking coins under Greek cultural influence since the late fifth century, but by the mid-third century the city was operating firmly within Rome's orbit following the Social War settlements. Bronze fractional coinage of this type served the dense, commercially active port economy of the bay — a city that retained its Greek language and mint traditions long after political autonomy had effectively ended. The HN Italy 594 attribution places this piece within a well-documented but numerically modest series.
