Metapontion's bronze coinage of this period served the city's internal market during a stretch of acute political instability in Lucania, as Greek urban centers across the region faced mounting pressure from Italic peoples and, later, the upheaval of Pyrrhus's Italian campaign in the 280s. The city had long derived its wealth from the grain-rich Bradano plain, and small bronzes like this facilitated the everyday transactions that silver staters did not.
