正面描述 Nude figure of Poseidon striding vigorously to the right, his right arm raised and poised to cast his trident. A partial Greek legend, reading ΡΟΣΕΙ (abbreviated form of ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ or the city name ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝΙΑ), appears in the right field. On some specimens, a dolphin is depicted in the left field, serving as an additional symbol referencing the sea deity and the coastal city of Poseidonia. The style is consistent with South Italian die-cutting of the late fifth to early fourth century BC, displaying a bold, energetic rendering of the deity.

附加信息

Poseidonia — the Greek colony on the Tyrrhenian coast later renamed Paestum by the Romans — struck bronze coinage relatively late compared to its silver issues, which date back to the sixth century. This small bronze belongs to a period when the city was under increasing pressure from the Lucanian tribes pushing down from the interior, a process that culminated in the city's capture around 390 BC. The transition to Lucanian control effectively ended the Greek civic coinage tradition here.
