Obverse description Bust of Herakles facing right, head covered with the scalp of the Nemean lion, the beast's jaws framing the hero's face and its paws knotted at the neck, rendered in the vigorous late Classical style characteristic of Lucanian bronze coinage. The facial features are boldly modelled with a strong brow and prominent jaw. The field is plain and unlettered.

Reverse description A large, centrally placed barley ear with full, spreading grains fills the reverse field, serving as the principal civic emblem of Metapontion and a symbol of the city's agricultural prosperity. To the left of the stalk, the ethnic inscription META runs upward in Greek characters. The composition is bold and well-centred, typical of the Metapontine bronze series of the early Hellenistic period.
