Rhodes maintained its mint through one of the eastern Mediterranean's most turbulent stretches — the Mithridatic Wars brought Roman military action directly to Aegean trade routes, and the island's commercial alliances forced repeated diplomatic recalibrations between Roman and Pontic interests. The city had backed Rome since at least the Third Macedonian War, a loyalty that cost it territory in 166 BC when Rome stripped its Aegean possessions, though the mint kept operating.
