Aineia was a small Macedonian coastal settlement near the head of the Thermaic Gulf, reputedly founded by Aeneas himself during his flight from Troy — a founding myth the city exploited aggressively on its coinage. Bronze civic issues of this type represent the city's only substantial numismatic output; Aineia never achieved the commercial weight to produce silver at scale. The city faded into obscurity following Macedonian consolidation of the region under Philip II, which brackets the terminal date of this series neatly.
