| Reverse description | A bold plain cross extends to the full width of the coin, dividing the field into four quarters, with a beaded inner circle intersecting the cross arms to create a wheel-like composition typical of medieval denarii. The legend DE MA¥ RA NO is distributed around the outer margin in Gothic Latin characters, referencing the comital seat of Merano. Pellet or ornamental stops separate the legend segments. The cross design follows the broad-armed style prevalent in 13th-century north Italian and Alpine ecclesiastical coinage, struck on a somewhat irregular flan consistent with hand-hammered production. |
