Obverse description Within a wreath of palm branches bearing date clusters, the abbreviated Hebrew inscription שמע (Shim'on, referring to Simon bar Kokhba) is arranged around a central element in the field. The wreath is rendered in a stylized, hand-engraved manner typical of Bar Kokhba coinage, with individual leaves and fruits clearly delineated. A beaded border encircles the entire design. The coin was struck over an earlier Roman denarius, a common practice during the revolt, resulting in an irregular flan.
