Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the five quinas (escutcheons) arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of castles — set within a beaded inner circle. The legend PETRVS.D.G.PRINCEPS runs around the periphery in Latin capitals, identifying Pedro as Prince by the Grace of God. The overall style is characteristic of the crude hammered coinage of late seventeenth-century Portugal, with irregular flan preparation resulting in some legend truncation.

Reverse description Central field bears a large Roman numeral X flanked by small circular pellets at the cardinal points, all within a beaded inner circle, denoting the denomination of 10 Réis. The surrounding legend reads PORTVGALIA.ET. (with date, e.g. 1677) in Latin capitals, representing the title 'of Portugal and etc.' The legends and devices exhibit the typical irregularity of hand-struck copper coinage of the period, with variable letter spacing and occasional truncation consistent with the numerous die varieties catalogued by Gomes.
