| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the five quinas of Portugal and the castle bordure — set within a rectangular frame surmounted by a crown. Flanking the shield on either side are tall decorative pillar-like elements, giving the composition a distinctly architectural character typical of cast colonial Portuguese coinage. The mint mark letters D and A appear divided across the left and right flanking elements respectively, identifying the Damão mint. The overall design is rendered in low relief with somewhat crude cast detail consistent with the provincial workshop production of Portuguese India. |
