Obverse description Central field bearing a crowned imperial eagle displayed, executed in low relief consistent with hammered coinage of the late sixteenth century. A partial inner beaded border frames the central device, with the circumferential Latin legend reading RVDOL·SECVN· followed by the date 1581, attributing the issue to Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, characteristic of hand-struck minor silver coinage of the Bohemian mints. Die wear and striking weakness are evident across portions of the field, typical of high-volume circulation pfennig production of the period.
