Reverse description Central device displays the crowned Portuguese royal shield within a beaded inner circle, showing the quintas (five escutcheons arranged in cross) each charged with five bezants, with a bordure of castles. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. The circumferential legend PORTUGALIE is inscribed in Latin script around the outer field. The mint mark S for Lisboa (Lisbon) appears in the lower portion of the legend. The overall style is consistent with hammered Portuguese silver coinage of the first half of the sixteenth century.
