Obverse description Central field displays a crowned Portuguese royal shield of arms surmounted by an open crown with fleurs-de-lis, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The escutcheon bears the quinas (the five bezants arranged in cross formation) of the Kingdom of Portugal, rendered in the characteristic simplified style of hammered coinage of the period. The shield is flanked by the mint mark 'P-O' for Porto on the left. A Latin circular legend surrounds the inner circle, reading variants of IOANES (or IOANIS) followed by the numeral 3 and the abbreviation R (Rex), with PORTVGALIE or PORTVGALI appearing on different die varieties. The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of hand-struck Portuguese silver coinage of the early sixteenth century.
