| Obverse description | Central device consisting of the royal cipher of Manuel I — an interlaced 'M' surmounted by a royal crown — flanked by the mint mark 'L' to the left and a small 'º' mark to the right, all set within a beaded inner circle. The crowned monogram is rendered in a bold Gothic style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer border, partially obscured by the irregular flan edge. |
