Additional information

The vintém as a denomination emerged from João II's sweeping monetary reform of 1489, which reorganized Portuguese coinage around a decimal-adjacent system in preparation for the commercial demands of Atlantic expansion. The Porto mint's output from this period is consistently scarcer than Lisbon's, reflecting its secondary role in the broader production hierarchy.

The absence of castles from the shield on this variety is a deliberate heraldic choice, not a die error — João II stripped the Castilian quartering from the royal arms following the 1483–1484 purge of the Braganza faction, asserting a more distinctly Portuguese dynastic identity.
