Reverse description Portuguese royal shield of arms without castles, as borne by João II, centered within the field and surmounted by a royal crown with cross and fleurs-de-lis finials. Two small circular pellets or roundels appear in the field to the left and right of the shield. The entire design is enclosed within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a circular Latin legend reading along the outer border of the coin.

Additional information

João II inherited a monetary system in disarray and moved quickly to reform it, issuing new silver vinténs as part of a broader recoinage effort in the early 1490s. This particular variety — distinguished by the 'L-o' flanking the 'Y' — reflects the Lisboa mint's own marking convention within that reform series, and Gomes documents it as a discrete type precisely because these positional die details were not incidental but deliberate administrative choices.

The shield without castles is the telling diagnostic here, separating it from related issues where castle charges appear.
