Obverse description Impaled shield at center displaying the two-fold arms of the Bishopric of Basel and the personal arms of Bishop Wilhelm Rink von Baldenstein, divided vertically by a central palar line. The episcopal crozier appears on the dexter side and the Rink von Baldenstein family device on the sinister. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield, incorporating the date, reading WILHEL : EPS : BASI : 1623 :. The overall design is characteristic of early seventeenth-century hammered billon coinage of the Upper Rhenish ecclesiastical mints.
