Reverse description Central field bearing a Maltese-style cross with splayed arms, set within a beaded inner circle. The cross arms are boldly struck and fill the central area of the flan, a common type on small billon issues of the Bishopric of Basel. A circular Latin legend surrounds the cross, reading FIRMA . NOMEN : DOMINI : 1622, a pious motto meaning 'The name of the Lord is a strong tower,' with the date incorporated into the legend. The reverse design reflects the devotional iconographic conventions of Counter-Reformation ecclesiastical coinage.
