Obverse description Central field displays the Austrian shield — barry of silver and gules — set within a raised five-lobed cartouche or escutcheon frame. The shield and frame are enclosed by a plain inner circle, with the Latin legend ARCHIDVX AVSTRIAE disposed around the periphery between the inner circle and a beaded or rope outer border. The die-work is characteristic of late 16th-century hammered Tyrolean billon coinage, with somewhat irregular flan and bold, rustic lettering.
