Piggly Wiggly, founded in Memphis in 1916 by Clarence Saunders, was the first true self-service grocery chain — a retail format that replaced counter clerks with open shelves and customer-handled goods. Store-issued scrip of this kind circulated as promotional or change-making instruments during periods when small-denomination coinage was scarce or simply inconvenient at volume checkout. The Charleston, South Carolina location places this squarely within the chain's aggressive 1920s southeastern expansion before Saunders lost control of the company in 1923 following a catastrophic short-selling battle on the New York Stock Exchange.

Variable denomination cent scrip is uncommon in any retail series.
