| Obverse description | Central field features a cow passant to the right, the heraldic symbol of Béarn, set within a raised inner circle. The bovine figure is rendered in low relief in a crude, medieval hammered style typical of small feudal billon coinage. The surrounding legend, separated from the central motif by the inner circle, reads F * F * D * G * DNS * BEARNI, identifying the issuer as Francis Phoebus, Lord of Béarn by the grace of God. The flan is irregular in shape, consistent with hand-struck medieval production, and the overall strike is somewhat weak in areas due to the hammering technique. |
