Obverse description Central device consists of the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms, depicting the traditional quartered escutcheon with the five quinas (bezants arranged in a cross) and the bordure of castles, all rendered in fine detail. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown and flanked by elaborate scrolled mantling. The circular legend LUDOVICUS * I * DEI * GRATIA runs along the periphery, interrupted by decorative star stops. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
