Kausambi — ancient Vatsa capital on the Yamuna, identified with the modern site at Kosam — was one of the six great cities listed in early Buddhist texts. By the second century BC it was a commercial hub substantial enough to issue its own civic coinage independent of any dynastic authority, a relatively rare arrangement in the Gangetic plain during this period. The punch-marked tradition was already giving way to cast and die-struck types, and Kausambi's municipal issues fall squarely in that transitional moment.
