Obverse description Bare male head facing right, rendered in the Ibero-Roman artistic tradition with finely detailed wavy hair. A dolphin is positioned behind the head, and two further dolphins appear in the field before the face, serving as characteristic mint symbols of the Saltuie oppidum. The portraiture displays strong Hellenistic influence typical of Iberian coinage of the late Republican period.

Additional information

Saltuie was an Iberian oppidum whose exact location remains debated but is generally placed in the middle Ebro valley, likely near modern Zaragoza. The settlement issued bronze coinage during the long transitional period following Roman consolidation of Hispania after the Second Punic War, when indigenous communities retained enough administrative autonomy to produce their own currency under Roman tolerance — a policy Rome extended selectively as a tool of pacification rather than generosity. The series is referenced consistently across the major Hispanic numismatic corpora, suggesting a well-documented if modest output.
