Uglješa Mrnjavčević ruled Serres and much of eastern Macedonia as a semi-autonomous despot under nominal Serbian imperial authority, but struck his own coinage in a manner that announced far greater ambitions. His brother Vukašin had claimed the title of King, and the two jointly controlled what remained of the fractured Serbian empire after Stefan Dušan's death in 1355. Both died at the Maritsa River in September 1371, routed by an Ottoman force — ending this entire minting authority in a single afternoon.
