| Reverse description | A fully open rose bloom facing upward, depicted in bold relief at the center of a shallow incuse square, serving as the civic emblem and punning symbol of Rhodes (Greek: rhodon, meaning rose). To the lower left of the rose appears a closed rosebud on a stem, and to the right a caduceus or similar secondary symbol. The Greek legend POΔION is inscribed along the upper border of the incuse square. The incuse treatment of the reverse is characteristic of early Rhodian silver coinage produced at the time of the synoikismos (unification) of 408 BC. |
