Additional information

Abdera, a Thracian coastal colony originally founded by Clazomenae and refounded by Teos around 545 BC, became one of the wealthier Greek cities of the northern Aegean — its prosperity built largely on Thracian silver from the hinterland. The city's coinage of this period draws directly on that access to raw metal.

May's die study remains the foundational reference for Abderan coinage, and the relatively tight catalogue numbers suggest this type was a modest issue within a series already well-documented by the mid-20th century.
