Additional information

Johann Jakob Trivulzio received the lordship of Mesocco in 1483 after the Val Mesolcina was sold to him by the Sax family, heavily indebted after years of conflict. A Milanese condottiere of considerable reputation — he would later command the French forces at the Battle of Fornovo in 1495 — Trivulzio struck small copper issues like this trillina as much to assert jurisdictional authority over his Alpine territory as for any pressing monetary need. The val's proximity to Graubünden made such assertions politically loaded.
